Optical switches

Traditional switching methods employing optical-electrical-optical conversion to switch optical signals are power hungry, consuming power in excess of 15W/fibre. Moreover, different photonic technologies employed for large switching matrices exhibit high-loss, increased power dissipation and wavelength-dependent operation. Within C3PO high-port count and low-power optical switches will be designed and developed targeting dynamic transport and access networks:

  • Low power optical switch with less than 200mW/fibre
  • 40x40 and 80x80 switching matrix
  • Investigation for latching operation so to achieve zero power once switch is configured
  • Wavelength independent operation (colourless)
  • Bi-directional operation
  • Suitable for system integration into IPoDWDM and WDM-PON OLT system achieving automatic reconfiguration of channels
  • Suitable for system integration into multi-degree Reconfigurable Add-Drop Multiplexer (ROADM) systems achieving unprecedented degree of flexibility
